| Original caption: “Yanks of Sixtieth Infantry Regiment advance into a Belgian town under the protection of a heavy tank.” These United States Army soldiers, armed with M1 Garand rifles, are from the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, as they assault the town of Sprimont. Note “AAA-O” stencils on their helmets. The 60th Infantry Regiment had cleared the town, probably the source of the caption confusion. The Sherman tank is a mid-production small hatch M4A2, a type more commonly used by the United Kingdom Royal Army and the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific. Note additional armor plates and “Rhino tusk” fitted to front of the tank for cutting through the French bocage. | |
