| USS Boise (CL-47) returned to Pearl Harbor and was tasked to conduct a raiding cruise in Japanese waters in hopes of creating an impression, including generating radio traffic, of a striking force heading for Japan to draw attention away from preparations for Guadalcanal. Boise departed Pearl Harbor July 27 and was expected to begin this raid on the Japanese sampan patrol line guarding approaches to Honshu about 750 miles (1,210 kilometers) east of Tokyo on August 5. She completed the raid on August 8. 2 seaplanes that had to land on the water at sunset were lost, 1 being found by the Japanese with indications this caused apprehension of a strike force preparing to attack Japan. In August, she escorted a convoy to Fiji and New Hebrides. | |
