| United States Army General Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969) stands with French Army General Marie-Pierre Kœnig (October 10, 1898 – September 2, 1970) in the back of a German Mercedes 770 staff car, similar to the 1 used by Führer und Reichskanzler (“Leader and Reichchancellor”) Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 – April 30, 1945). Behind them is the Grand-Palais, featuring the Crimes Hitlériens (“Hitler’s Crimes”) exhibition, originally held from June 10 – July 31, 1945. The French government sponsored a huge exhibition, filling 29 rooms of the Grand Palais. 1 of the rooms was devoted, according to the catalogue, to ‘The Jews’. It presented a chronology of the internment of Jews in the French Camps of Pithiviers, Beuane-la-Rolande, and Drancy, in the occupied zone, and at Gurs in Southwestern France under the rule of Vichy. Among the curators of the exhibition was Lord Robert Alderson Wright (October 15, 1869 – June 27, 1964), chairman of the UN War Crimes Commission. More than a 1,000,000 people visited the exhibition and were exposed to the horrors of the Holocaust for the 1st time. In a ceremony at the Arc De Triomphe Paris that afternoon, Eisenhower was presented with the French Cross of Liberation by Chairman of the Provisional Government of the French Republic General Charles De Gaulle (November 22, 1890 – November 9, 1970). General Eisenhower then continued his official tour of the French capital, with a visit to the Cathedral of Saint-Louis-des-Invalides where he was greeted by the President of the Paris City Council. Later the General dined with De Gaulle at the Hotel De Ville. Photographer William C. Allen (1913 – 1974) covered the Italian campaign during World War II. Later he ran the photo department at the United States Department of Agriculture. | |
