| Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung G mit 7.5 cm Kampfwagenkanone 40 (“Assault gun III version G with 7.5 cm [three inch] tank cannon 40”) manuever in the Ukrainian mud – Rasputitsa (“mud season”) outside Dnipropetrovsk. A Borgward B 3000 truck is in the foreground. Nazi forces were unable to stop the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Ukrainian Fronts (equivalent to an Army Group) and the 1st Belorussian Front from crossing the Dnieper River and digging into the clay bank on the western side, despite extremely heavy losses. This allowed the Soviet Red Army to encircle and occupy Dnipropetrovsk on October 25, 1943. The city, which had a prewar population of 233,000, had just 5,000 civilian residents remaining on October 25. Over 10,000 Sturmgeschütz III were built during World War II. 30,000 Borgwards were built between 1938 and 1950. | |
