Ships maneuvering off Tulagi, Solomon Islands, on August 9, 1942. Photographed from USS Ellet (DD-398). USS Chicago (CA-29) is at right, with a destroyer’s stern and wake in the foreground. Column of smoke in the left center distance, beyond the 2 destroyers, may be from the burning USS George F. Elliott (AP-13). USS Chicago, with USS Mugford (DD-389), USS Patterson (DD-392), USS Dewey (DD-349), USS Ralph Talbot (DD-390), and USS Ellet (DD-398) under Captain Lawrence F. Reifsnider (November 26, 1887 – May 14, 1956) leading Task Group 62.1, bound for Nouméa, New Caledonia at 1530 Hours. During the Battle of Savo Island the night before, USS Chicago suffered a torpedo hit to the bow. Proceeded to Nouméa at 10 knots (11.5 miles per hour / 18.5 kilometers per hour).
