Japanese Air Attack on Tulagi and Guadalcanal

Part of Task Group 62.2, USS President Jackson was assigned to Transport Division E. The ship sounded General Quarters at 1048 Hours and the Japanese planes arrived at 1200 Hours. Flying 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) above the water, USS President Jackson’s 3-inch (75 millimeter)/50 caliber guns were in action with other ships present. The ship secured from General Quarters at 1648 Hours. The next day, USS President Jackson received survivors of USS Astoria (CA-34) before leaving with the rest of Task Force 62.
