After rendezvousing in Nuku’alofa Harbor, Tongatabu, 3 American Task Forces combined for practice landing exercises on Fiji. Buchanan joined Fire Support Group Mike, Task Group 62.4. Task Force 62, enroute to the Solomon Islands for Operation Watchtower, the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi, embarked on August 1, 1942.
