Wreckage on Iwo Jima Beach

Original caption: “United States GIs inspect the remains of an ammunition truck hit by Japanese fire on the beach at Iwo Jima.” A CCKW 21⁄2-ton, 6 by 6 truck serving as an ammunition carrier was struck by a Japanese shell, touching off a large explosion, obliterating the vehicle. Marines inspect the aftermath. Shrapnel damage can be seen in the LVT Amtrac “Marjorie June” in the right foreground. Artillery fire was directed onto the beach from Mount Suribachi in the background of this view. This photo was taken by Joe Rosenthal (October 9, 1911 – August 20, 2006).
