USS San Juan (CL-54) as seen from USS Wasp (CV-7) on the eve of the Guadalcanal-Tulagi invasion. USS San Juan left San Diego, California, United States on June 30, 1942, as part of Task Force 18 and arrived at Nuku’alofa Harbor, Tongatabu, on July 18. Following rehearsal in the Fiji Islands, San Juan provided gunfire support for the landings at Tulagi on August 7, 1942.
