| USS Ellyson (DD-454) Underway in the Atlantic, circa late 1942. She is painted in Measure 12 (Modified). USS Ellyson was laid down by Federal Shipbuilding of Kearny, New Jersey on 20 December 1940. She was launched on 26 July 1941 sponsored by Elizabeth Gordon “Gordie” Ellyson Carmichael (January 19, 1922 – March 28, 2016), daughter of namesake Commander Theodore G. Ellyson (February 27, 1885 – February 27, 1928), and commissioned on November 28, 1941. The ship was initially painted in Measure 12 (Modified) through the end of 1941; then, it was painted in Measure 22 – Navy Blue hull with Haze Gray upper decks and superstructure – through 1942. Throughout 1943, USS Ellyson was painted in dazzle camouflage; Measure 32, Design 22 “D.” Finally, in 1945, USS Ellyson was painted Navy Blue overall, hull, decks, and superstructure – Measure 21. Ellyson received 7 battle stars for World War II service. | |
