United States Navy Captain Forrest P. Sherman, Commanding Officer, inspects USS Wasp (CV-7) Marine Detachment

Image Information
USS Wasp (CV-7) Captain Forrest P. Sherman (October 30, 1896 – July 22, 1951), ship’s Commanding Officer, inspects her Marine detachment. Walking next to Sherman is Captain of the Marine Detachment, John W. Kennedy, Junior, (December 20, 1918 – September 15, 1942) who went down with the ship. Captain Kennedy was not seen after the torpedoes struck the Wasp; he was reported as missing in action after the sinking, and officially declared dead on September 16, 1943. Fellow Wasp Marine Private 1st Class James E. Ellis (May 31, 1924 – January 21, 2007) later heard that Kennedy was in quarters at the time of the attack, and was instantly killed when a torpedo – 1 of 3 that hit USS Wasp, of 6 fired by Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-19 – exploded in his stateroom.
