United States Army General Douglas MacArthur (January 26, 1880 – April 5, 1964) right, seen in profile, on the bridge of USS Nashville (CL-43), off Leyte during the landings there in late October 1944. Standing in the center, also seen in profile, is Lieutenant General George C. Kenney (August 6, 1889 – August 9, 1977). Task Unit 77.1.2 consisting of USS Nashville, USS Abner Read (DD-526), and USS BUSH (DD 529) embarked MacARthur and his staff at Hollandia, Netherlands New Guinea, at 1057 Hours on October 16, 1944. They rendezvoused with transports of Task Force 79, and Task Group 77.1, which consisted of the flagship group led by USS Wasatch (AGC-9). All these ships arrived off Leyte on 0725 Hours on October 20, 1944. MacArthur toured the landing beaches at his request. At 1400 Hours, MacArthur used United States Army Signal Corps radio facilitates in Nashville to address the Filipino people. This broadcast was also transmitted to the United States. MacArthur and his staff disembarked at 0925 Hours on October 25, 1944, and landed on White Beach to set up his Headquarters on Leyte. USS Nashville then joined Task Group 77.2, assigned to defend the beachhead.
