“This Man is Your Friend. Chinese. He Fights for Freedom.”

Image Information
Original caption: “This Man is Your Friend. Chinese. He Fights for Freedom.” The “This Man Is Your Friend” series, featuring not only Chinese soldiers but also English, Australian, Russian, Canadian, Ethiopian, and Dutch soldiers, helped educate little-traveled Americans about the geographically and politically diverse nature of the national forces with whom Americans were allied against the Axis powers. Notably, the French were not included. Executive Order 9182 established the Office of War Information (OWI) on June 13, 1942. OWI produced photographs and posters and reviewed film scripts. As the propaganda arm of the Roosevelt Administration, the OWI served as the link between the battlefront and civilian communities.
