| A portrait of Raoul Wallenberg, the 1st telegram from Sweden asking the embassy in Moscow about his whereabouts, and some 1,200 other, previously classified documents, together with 3 compact discs containing some 28,000 documents, are spread out on a table in Stockholm, Sweden Thursday June 19, 1997. Sweden on Thursday released the previously secret documents on Wallenberg, who is credited with saving tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Nazis during World War II. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, personal items belonging to Raoul Wallenberg (August 4, 1912 – disappeared 17 January 1945) were returned to his surviving relatives. His diplomatic passport, wallet, address book, diary, ration book, cigarette case, Swedish and Hungarian money and other currencies, and his driver’s license were exhibited to the press. Thousands of documents, both at the former Soviet Archives, the Swedish National Archives, and the United States National Archives and Records Administration, were examined, and a public report was issued. It included testimony from former Soviet prisoners incarcerated with Wallenberg. The Swedish Flag flown about Minerva Street in Budapest during the Red Army’s invasion, still battle scarred, was exhibited for the 1st time in 60 years. It was saved by the Swedish Red Cross in 1945. Despite the 1989 investigation and other subsequent investigations, no definitive account of Raoul Wallenberg’s fate has been determined. On November 26, 1963, Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Israel, recognized Raoul Wallenberg as Righteous Among the Nations for his work saving Jews in Hungary in 1944-1945. | |
