Sturzkampffliegerschule 1 Stuka in a Dive Bomb Attack

Junkers Ju-87B Stuka dive bomber of Sturzkampffliegerschule 1 (“Dive Fighter Pilot School 1”) drops 1 250 kilogram (550 pound) bomb beneath the fuselage and 54 kilogram (110 pound) bombs from the wings. The Stuka 1st flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in the Spanish Civil War the with Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion in 1937. Sturzkampffliegerschule 1 was set up as the Luftwaffe’s 1st training unit for dive bomber training on March 1, 1936, at Kitzingen. Another school was set up at Barth on November 1, 1938. The schools were merged on March 1, 1939, to form the Sturzkampffliegerschule Kitzingen (“Kitzingen Dive Fighter Pilot School”). On November 1, 1939, the school was moved to Insterburg. On January 16, 1940, the name was finally changed to Tauchkampffliegerschule 1 (“Dive Fighter Pilot School 1”). The school was divided into staff and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Squadrons. A 4th Squadron was set up on October 1, 1940. The school was moved to Regensburg-Oberraubling in October 1940 and to Wertheim on April 30, 1941. On December 8, 1942, the name was changed to Sturzkampfgeschwader 101 (“Dive Squadron 101”).
