| Scots Guards in training, 60 miles west of Cairo on the edge of the desert. 2 Valentine tanks are seen with 2 soldiers. 1 carries the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III bolt-action rifle, the standard British field weapon. The other carries the Bren gun, the standard light machine gun. 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards, as part of the 22nd Guards Brigade, gave excellent service at the Battle of Gazala on June 13; after a determined resistance, 2nd Battalion was overrun in a night attack, and withdrew in good order to Tobruk, where most of the unit was forced to surrender on June 20, 1942, when the garrison fell. Some escaped to Egypt. The reformed 2nd Battalion fought in the Battle of El Alamein in November 1942, and the Battle of Medenine in March 1943. The Scots Guards went on to fight in Italy and France. | |
