| United States Army soldiers inspect a Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 171) “Ursula,” destroyed during an attack by 1st Battalion, Panzer-Lehr-Division. 20 Panthers from the 1st Battalion and 12 Panzerkampfwagen IVs (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 161) from the 2nd Battalion, Panzer-Lehr-Division counterattacked the United States Army 39th and 47th Infantry Regiments, supported by A and C Companies of the 899th Self-Propelled Tank Destroyer Battalion, armed with M10 “Wolverines” with 3-inch (75 millimeter) anti-tank guns. 2 dead Nazi German Heer (“Army”) Panzergrendiers from 901.Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment are on the engine deck. Note the spare track roller attached to the engine deck. A and C Companies destroyed 20 Panzers in this defensive operation. 10 of them were Panthers. A and C Companies received the Presidential Unit Citation for this action. “Ursula” was hauled away by the Americans and probably ended up in the tank park at d’Isigny-sur-Mer, and was eventually scrapped. | |
