Panzer IIIs Race to the Channel

Image Information
Nazi German Heer (“Army”) Panzerkampfwagen III Sonderkraftfahrzeug 141 Ausführung F (“Armored Car III Special Vehicle 141 Version F”) during the drive to cut off the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and the 1st French Army in Belgium. Note that the tank closest to the camera is a Panzerbefehlswagen III command tank with long-range radios and a dummy gun; note the multiple aerials. Armed with the 5 centimeter (1.96 inch) Kampfwagenkanone 38 L/42 gun, the Panzer III Ausf. F was a formidable weapon in the early part of the war, but increasingly met tanks with better armor and heavier guns. Production of the Panzer III ceased in 1943 but the Sturmgeschütz III assault gun which had been developed from the Panzer III chassis continued in production until the end of the war.
