| Original caption: “German prisoners of war who surrendered to General Patton’s Third Army march in an endless line through farmland east of the Rhine.” Prisoners of war brought to United States 3rd Army cages during the period March 25-31, 1945 numbered 30,325 reflecting the rapid advances. Prisoners received at Army hospitals during the period numbered 1,480, making a total of 31,715 for the week. 3rd Army sent 200,000 Prisoners of War to the camp at Arlon between August 1, 1944, and March 5, 1945. A 100,000 more Prisoners of War were captured by March 25, when the 300,000th Prisoner was sent to the enclosure at Trier. Photographer Byron “Beano” Heywood Rollins (April 26, 1913 – January 8, 1988) was 1 of 2 press pool photographers that accompanied the 87th Infantry Division as they invaded Koblenz. Rollins worked for World Wide Photos before World War II and joined the Associated Press for the Normandy landings. In March 1945, he was assigned to the 3rd United States Army as pool photographer. He photographed the Orhdruf subcamp when it was liberated and followed 3rd Army to Buchenwald. | |
