Original caption: “A Marine sitting on a beach on Tarawa. The Marine takes a drink from a canteen while holding his rifle in his other hand. Across his chest are multiple grenades. In front of him is a small canvas bag. Behind him are other Marines looking out in different directions across the beach.” After the Battle of Tarawa, a thirsty Marine drinks from his canteen. You can see other Marines in foxholes behind him. Photographed by Warrant Officer Obadiah “Obie” E. Newcomb V, (June 22, 1909 – February 25, 2004) United States Marine Corps Reserve.
