| M3 Stuart light tank and Douglas A-20C Havoc serial number 41-19221 on the deck of a steamship registered in San Francisco. Douglas and Boeing built Havocs in Santa Monica, El Segundo, and Los Angeles, so Lend Lease shipments left from California. 41-19221 was designated BZ196/BZ570 by the Royal Air Force (RAF) but that order was transferred to the Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily Soyuza Sovetskih, or VVS (“Soviet Air Force”) However after Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the bulk of A-20C Havocs from 41-19088 to 41-19462 were retained by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF). While 41-19221 was packed for shipment, it was pulled before sailing and sent to the USAAF for use as a training aircraft. Assigned to the 82nd Observation Squadron, 71st Observation Group, 41-19221 was based at Esler Field, Louisiana. On February 10, 1943, 1st Lieutenant Claude W. Vroman (1919 – February 10, 1943) was killed when 41-19221 crashed at Salman Field, Louisiana. The Havoc was destroyed. | |
