| On December 7, 1942, the 1st anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, USS New Jersey (BB-62) was christened by Governor Charles Edison’s (August 3, 1890 – July 31, 1969) wife Carolyn Hawkins Edison (November 9, 1895 – June 28, 1963) with a bottle of New Jersey white wine, and Kate Smith (May 1, 1907 – June 17, 1986) sang “God Bless America.” Launched stern 1st, the New Jersey’s stern slid across the river to touch her namesake state briefly. USS New Jersey was the largest ship that had been built on inclined ways since the RMS Queen Mary. | |
