| Kriegsmarine Großadmiral (“Grand Admiral”) Erich J. A. Raeder (April 24, 1876 – November 6, 1960) inspects a warship of the Kriegsmarine (“Nazi German Navy”) Raeder hoped to construct a German-Italian-Vichy French naval force that could confront the United Kingdom Royal Navy. At the Merano Conference of February 13-14, 1941, Raeder hid the capabilities of British radar installations on Malta from the Italians, leading to significant casualties among their air crews attacking the Mediterranean island. The conference did discuss Atlantic and Mediterranean strategy, supply routes for Libya, and produced an agreement for Germany to supply fuel to the Italian fleet. Merano marked the transition of Italy from an equal Axis partner to a vassal state of Nazi Germany. | |
