General Eisenhower inspecting personnel at Twelfth Corps Headquarters.” United States Army General Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969) Supreme Commander, Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) reviews United Kingdom Royal Army soldiers of XII Corps, commanded by Lieutenant General Neil Ritchie (July 29, 1897 – December 11, 1983). The United Kingdom Royal 2nd Army, commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Miles Dempsey (December 15, 1896 – June 5, 1969) had III corps by late 1944. At the time, XII Corps and 2nd Army were attempting to liberate Venlo, Netherlands. Units were in operation around Blerick as Eisenhower visited the XII Corps Headquarters.
