| The London Fire Brigade can do little to stop the blaze at Holborn Circus. Firefighters were present from after 0230 Hours, when the bombs struck, all through the night and the next day. Fireman tackle the blaze in the aftermath of the air raid on May 11, 1941, on Charterhouse Street, near the junction with Hatton Garden. Most of the buildings in view as far as the Farringdon Road were either destroyed by bombing or were later demolished, except the bank building on the extreme left. The May 1941 bombing raid by the Luftwaffe destroyed not only Holborn Circus, and part of Smithfield Market, but all of the buildings along the south side of Charterhouse Street through to Holborn Viaduct. The seriously damaged ornate dome at the corner of Farringdon Road was finally demolished by a controlled explosion. | |
