| Eva A. Braun (February 6, 1912 – April 30, 1945) and Führer und Reichskanzler (“Leader and Reich Chancellor”) Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 – April 30, 1945) review a dinner menu on the patio in the Berghof (“Mountain Court”), Adolf Hitler’s holiday home in the Obersalzberg retreat in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. Another building was the Kehlsteinhaus (known in English as the Eagle’s Nest) is a Nazi-constructed building erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rises above Obersalzberg near the southeast German town of Berchtesgaden. It was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings. It was visited on 14 documented instances by Adolf Hitler. Today, it is open seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden, and tourist site. The premises – except for the Kehlsteinhaus – were heavily damaged by an Allied air raid on April 25, 1945. On May 4, 4 days after Hitler’s suicide in Berlin, retreating Schultzstaffel (SS) troops set fire to the villa as Hitler had previously ordered. | |
