| Die Besetzung der Landeshauptstadt (“The occupation of the state capital.”) German troops march through the Arc de Triomphe. The Germans instituted a daily parade on the Champs-Élysées every afternoon to humiliate the French and provide a daily reminder of the occupation of Paris. German soldiers, out of respect for the tomb of the unknown soldier buried in the Arc de Triomphe and the eternal flame, would go around the arch rather than through it. | |
