Captured French Soldier by the Roadside

Image Information
A dejected French soldier, recently captured by the Nazi German Heer (“Army”), comes to terms with captivity. He is probably an officer, judging by his leggings, which are leather, not wrapped canvas puttees like rank and file foot soldiers. Note the 2.5 Liter (0.66 gallon) personal water canteen. This is the double-spout version based on the 1 liter (0.26 gallon) canteen, which it replaced in 1915. The 1935 equipment sought to better distribute the various items carried, so the canteen was now suspended by 2 short straps which hung from clips on the undersides of the right-hand ammunition pouch and rear passant cloth strap rather than on its own independent strap as had been the case previously.
