| Atomic cloud bursting over Hiroshima in the area of Furuichi-cho, 2 minutes after the explosion, at 0817 Hours, Tokyo Time. A mushroom cloud rose thousands of feet into the air blotting out the sun and showering deadly ash and radioactive debris on what remained of the town and people of Hiroshima, Japan. On August 6, Yoshito Matsushige (January 2, 1913 – January 16, 2005), who had been ill and undergoing medical treatment at his home 1.6 miles (2.7 kilometers) south of the hypocentre at the time of the explosion, witnessed “an orange ball” rising above Hiroshima following the flash and blast from the atomic bombing. He took 5 photos after this 1, the only known photos of Hiroshima after the atomic attack on the day of the blast. | |
