| Original caption: “A Marine sitting on a beach on Tarawa. The Marine takes a drink from a canteen while holding his rifle in his other hand. Across his chest are multiple grenades. In front of him is a small canvas bag. Behind him are other Marines looking out in different directions across the beach.” After the Battle of Tarawa, a thirsty Marine drinks from his canteen. He has an 8-round 30 caliber (7.62 millimeter) clip pinned to his bandolier of Mark 2 “pineapple” grenades. After the battle, the 2nd Marine Division temporarily bivouacked along Red Beach.
