| Original caption: “A girl member of guerrilla forces opposing Greek troops in Macedonia, slumps dejectedly in a truck bringing her to Kozane after her capture, during guerrilla raid on village of Grevena in which more than hundred members of attacking force were killed. Man on stretcher at left died during trip to Kozane.” Dimokratikós Stratós Elládas, (DAG – “Democratic Army of Greece”) Commander Markos Vafeiadis (January 28, 1906 – February 22, 1992) mustered 1,200 men and women for an offensive on Grevena, the town that controlled the most direct road from Athens to western Macedonia. Some of the soldiers were veterans of an earlier battle for the town of Konitza. Some were conscripts, but they were sympathetic to the Communist cause. The effort failed because the DAG lacked effective command and control, while the Greek National Army called in air support and rushed reinforcements to the battle. The Prisoners of War were taken by truck to the Headquarters of the Greek Army 15th Division. Over a 100 DAG fighters were killed. | |
