| Original caption: “Corporal Larry Mutinsk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, A Company, First Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, Forty-Fifth Infantry Division, Seventh Army, hands out his last pack of cigarettes to the eager reaching hands of the prisoners within the wire stockade of the prison camp at Dachau.” While this is identified as United States Army Corporal Larry Matinsk, this name does not appear on the roster of the 157th Infantry. This unidentified soldier puts cigarettes into the extended hands of newly liberated prisoners behind a stockade in the Allach Konzentrationslager (KZ; “Concentration Camp”). Also pictured are Private Arthur W. Toratti (May 24, 1920 – June 20, 2003), 1st Platoon, C Company, 157th Infantry Regiment, 2nd from left, and Private George J. Babel (June 2, 1925 – December 5, 2003), 1st Platoon, C Company, 157th Infantry Regiment, 3rd from the left. The soldier carriers a German pistol, field glasses, and an ascot. It’s possible he is not a Corporal, but an officer. KZ Munich-Allach was a subcamp of KZ Dachau. American Soldiers of the United States 7th Army, including members of the 42nd Infantry Division, 45th Infantry Division, and 20th Armored Division participated in the subcamp’s liberation. The main concentration camp at Dachau had more than 120 subcamps in the area. Allach provided slave labor for nearby factories of Bavarian Motor Works (engines), Dyckerhoff (cement), Sager & Woerner (construction), Kirsch Sägemühle (lumber), Pumpel and Company in Lochhausen (underground complex) and Organisation Todt (construction) with up to 17,000 prisoners in 1945. More than 1,800 of them died. It was the largest sub-camp of the KZ Dachau system. | |
