Survivors of the atomic attack move along the prefectural road away from the Urakami District towards Nagasaki Station, about one mile (2.2 kilometers) from the hypocenter, Near Yachiyo-machi District. Note streetcar tracks and wreckage of the branch office of the Saibu Gas Company Limited in the background. Army photographer Yosuke Yamahata followed the road into Nagasaki. He later wrote, "A warm wind began to blow. Here and there in the distance, I saw small fires, like elf-fires, smoldering: Nagasaki had already been completely destroyed. Jun Higashi, a writer, and painter Eiji Yamada and I progressed quickly along the prefectural road that ran down the middle of the plain. Stepping carefully in spite of our hurry, we nearly tripped on the human and animal corpses lying in our path."
