Practicing what would be known as "duck and cover" during the Cold War, schoolchildren use a building and the flaps of their knapsacks to cover their faces during civil defense training. Millions of school aged children were evacuated from heavy urban areas, one of the few successful preparations the Japanese government made before the firestorms started. Tsuruga was bombed with incendiaries on the night of July 12-13, 1945. 109 Japanese were killed. Over 5,000 homes were destroyed.
