WAVE Starts SNJ Engine

Original Caption: “WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) activities at Jacksonville, Florida. Violet Falkum, Aviation Machinist’s Mate, spins prop of SNJ, training plane.” Violet L. Falkum (October 21, 1919 – March 18, 2008) trained at Great Lakes Naval Air Station. Falkum was teaching naval aviation trainees. She was promoted to Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class in November 1943. Photos of her training experience were widely circulated in late 1943 to encourage women to sign up for the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVE) program. More than 100,000 women served in the WAVES during World War II. Most were discharged in 1946. The North American Aviation SNJ was the United States Navy designation for the T-6 Texan.
