| Military Advisor to the Commonwealth Government, United States Army Major General Douglas MacArthur (January 26, 1880 – April 5, 1964) with Philippine Department commander, United States Army Major General Jonathan M. Wainwright (August 23, 1883 – September 2, 1953). United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) was created on July 26, 1941. MacArthur was recalled to active duty on July 17 and assigned as commander of Army Forces in the Far East. In March, due to the worsening Allied position in Asia and the Pacific, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945) ordered MacArthur to relocate his command to Australia. MacArthur’s famous speech regarding the Philippines, in which he said, “I came out of Bataan and I shall return” was made on March 20 at Terowie, South Australia during his 1st contact with the press. G Wainwright officially assumed control of the remaining forces in the Philippines, now known as United States Forces in the Philippines (USFIP) on March 23. He surrendered on Corregidor on May 6, 1942, eventually ordering all forces in the Philippines to surrender. | |
