| USS LST-77 lands 5th Army M4 Sherman Tanks during the Anzio Campaign. Note Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP) on the davits. LST-77 was laid down on February 20, 1943, at Jeffersonville, Indiana, by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company; launched on April 21, 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Anna Berry (June 17, 1910 – May 25, 2003); and commissioned on July 3, 1943. During World War II, LST-77 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the operations Convoy UGS-37-April 1944, Anzio, and Invasion of southern France during August and September 1944. LST-77 was decommissioned on December 24, 1944, and transferred to the United Kingdom. She was returned to the custody of the United States on May 12, 1946, and struck from the Navy list on June 19, 1946. On November 7, 1947, she was sold to James A. Hughes (December 8, 1904 – September 6, 1965), of New York City, for scrapping. LST-77 earned 2 battle stars for World War II. | |
