| Left to right, Personal Secretary to the Führer und Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler, Martin Bormann (June 17, 1900 – May 2, 1945), Aide and Adjutant to Adolf Hitler Julius Schaub (August 20, 1898 – December 27, 1967), Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering (January 12, 1893 – October 15, 1946), Luftwaffe Generaloberst Bruno Loerzer (January 22, 1891 – August 23, 1960) and unknown visiting the Führer’s Wolfsschanze (“Wolf’s Lair”) headquarters after the assassination attempt by Oberstleutnant Claus von Stauffenberg (November 15, 1907 – July 21, 1944). Führer und Reichskanzler (“Leader and Reich Chancellor”) Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 – April 30, 1945) narrowly escaped death when von Stauffenberg’s bomb exploded on July 20, 1944. It killed 2 people and wounded Hitler and others. Hitler was only slightly wounded, more shaken than hurt, and received visitors that afternoon. Meanwhile, his deputies ruthlessly purged the Heer (“German Army”) of thousands of officers suspected to be sympathetic to the plotters. | |
