Lieutenant Andrew D. Marshall, pilot in a Negro fighter group of the Mediterranean Allied Air Force had his plane shot up by flak during a strafing mission over Greece before the Allied invasion. When he came down all that was left of the plane was his engine and himself. But he only suffered some bruises and cuts. Greeks hid him from the Nazis, then directed him to the British forces when they parachuted into Greece. Here Lieutenant Marshall tells an American pilot of the 51st Troop Carrier Wing of his harrowing experience.” 1st Lieutenant Andrew D. Marshall (1924 – presumed dead December 30, 1945) graduated from flight training on March 12, 1944. He was assigned to the 301st Fighter Squadron as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was shot down by anti-aircraft fire on October 6 over Eleusis, Greece. He hid with Greek Partisans until the Royal Air Force (RAF) returned him to Ramitelli Air Field on October 18. On December 30, 1944, 2nd Lieutenant Marshall was again hit by flak. Radio transmissions from Lt. Marshall indicated he and another plane were trying to join up with another squadron for the return home, but they were never heard from again. Lieutenant Marshall was declared dead a year later. Marshall is included on the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Italy and was posthumously promoted to 1st Lieutenant. | |
