| Boeing YB-29-BW Superfortress in flight. The YB-29 closest to the camera is the 7th production prototype, serial number 41-36960. Named “Dauntless Dotty,” the YB-29s featured 4-bladed propellers instead of the 3-bladed ones mounted on the XB-29. Regardless, the B-29 still had fire issues from the Wright Cyclone R-3350 engines, even though the turbo-superchargers had been diagnosed and corrected. So many design changes came down, planes were flown from the factory to modification centers, creating the “Battle of Kansas,” as Boeing struggled to produce enough B-29s to equip even 1 of the planned bomb wings for the raids on Japan. | |
