| Lieutenant General George Smith Patton (November 11, 1885 – December 21, 1945) during the Battle of El Guettar. Patton’s II Corps engaged elements of Heeresgruppe Afrika (“Army Group Africa”) under General Hans-Jürgen von Arnim (April 4, 1889 – September 1, 1962), along with the Italian 1st Army under General Giovanni Messe (December 10, 1883 – December 18, 1968), defeating the more experienced panzertruppen for the 1st time. However, the Americans were unable to exploit their victory. El Guettar began to build Patton’s iconic status, however, and did much to repair morale in II Corps. | |
