| Soviet Red Army ISU-122 assault guns pause at the intersection of Rennbahnstraße and Schönstraße during the Battle of Berlin. While Soviet commanders preferred to use the ISU-122 as a tank destroyer, it could be used as an infantry support weapon for direct fire, or as a self-propelled howitzer for indirect fire. Major Roman Karmen (November 29, 1906 – April 29, 1978) was attached as a filmmaker and photographer to the 2nd Ukrainian Front (equivalent to a western army group). Karmen filmed the signing of the unconditional surrender by Germany (shown in the film “Berlin”, 1945). He filmed in Vietnam, India and South America after World War II. He celebrated the International Communist movement, and leaders like Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong (December 26, 1893 – September 9, 1976), Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro (August 13, 1926 – November 25, 2016), and Chilean President Salvador Allende (June 26, 1908 – September 11, 1973). North Korea used ISU-122s during the Korean War; Egypt used ISU-122s during several middle Eastern conflicts. | |
