| Original caption: Only the dome is intact in this freak picture of a 31,000-square-foot (2,880 square meters) building adjacent to the dock area. Used in July 1943 issue of Impact Magazine. According to Impact Magazine,”Between December 15, 1942, and May 7,1943, 17 Tunis missions were flown, 10 by United States Army Air Force Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, 1 by Martin B-26 Marauders and 1 by Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter-bombers, and 5 by Royal Air Force Vickers Wellingtons. A total of 1,115,540 pounds of bombs were dropped, from 4-pound (1.8 kilogram) incendiaries to 4,000-pound (1,800 kilogram) High Explosive bombs. This photo was taken at what is today on the waterfront docks near the intersection of Avenue Dag Hammarskjoeld and Rue Christophe Colomb, Tunis, Tunisia. This is probably a Zaouia, an Islamic tomb for a Holman or a school. It occupied 31,000 square feet (2,880 square meters). It was demolished, and the site is occupied by commercial buildings now. | |
