| Original caption: “HMS Renown, the ship that carried King George VI of England to his shipboard meeting with United States President Harry S. Truman after President Truman completed attending the Potsdam Conference in Germany.” HMS Renown, the lead ship of her class, was chosen as United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill’s (November 30, 1874 – January 24, 1965) conveyance to the Quebec and Cairo conferences in 1943. Placed in reserve in May 1945, Renown hosted a meeting between King George VI (December 14, 1895 – February 6, 1952) and United States President Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) on August 3, 1945, when the latter was en route home aboard the United States Navy heavy cruiser USS Augusta (CA-31). | |
