| The defendants at the Nuremberg Nazi trials. Pictured in the front row are: Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering (January 12, 1893 – October 15, 1946), Reichsleiter Rudolf Hess (April 26, 1894 – August 17, 1987), Reichsminister of Foreign Affairs Joachim Von Ribbentrop (April 30, 1893 – October 16, 1946), Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel (September 22, 1882 – October 16, 1946) and Chief of the Reich Security Main Office Ernst Kaltenbrunner (October 4, 1903 – October 16, 1946). In the back row are: Großadmiral Karl Doenitz (September 16, 1891 – December 24, 1980), Großadmiral Erich Raeder (April 24, 1876 – November 6, 1960), Reichsleiter for Youth Education Baldur von Schirach (May 9, 1907 – August 8, 1974), and General Plenipotentiary for Labour Deployment Fritz Sauckel (October 27, 1894 – October 16, 1946). On January 10-11, 1946, United States Navy Lieutenant Brady O. Bryson (March 14, 1915 – February 9, 2006) made the principal submission on the individual responsibility of Hjalmar Schacht (January 22, 1877 – June 3, 1970), President of the Reichsbank and Reich Minister of Economics. At the time of the indictment most of the prosecution staff shared Justice Jackson’s view that Schacht was a major conspirator because of his role in bringing Hitler to power. On January 10, 1946, the presentation of the case against Julius Streicher (February 12, 1885 – October 16, 1946), Racial Propagandist and Gau Leader of Franconia, was made by Lieutenant Colonel Mervyn Griffith-Jones (July 1, 1909 – July 13, 1979) of the United Kingdom’s Delegation. Streicher’s views were presented in his newspaper Der Sturmer. In January 1937, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler (October 7, 1900 – May 23, 1945) wrote that future history would state “that Julius Streicher and his weekly Der Stürmer would have contributed a great deal towards the enlightenment regarding the enemy of humanity (the Jews).” The Case against the Defendant Hans Frank (May 23, 1900 – October 16, 1946) was mainly concerned with his role as the Governor General of Occupied Poland and his close connection to the murder and ill-treatment of the Jews. Some of the most incriminating evidence against Frank came from the diary he had meticulously kept. The presentation of individual responsibility of Frank was made by Lieutenant Colonel William H. Baldwin (February 21, 1916 – November 1, 2005), an Assistant Trial Counsel of the American Delegation on January 10, 1946. | |
