USS Miami (CL-89) Prepares to depart for the invasion of Okinawa, March 1945. Photographed from USS West Virginia (BB-48). A P2-S1-DN3 Maritime Commission hull Admiral W. S. Benson class troop transport is behind USS Miami, and there are several other troop and attack transports, and another cruiser, in harbor. USS Miami anchored in Ulithi at 1544 Hours on March 5, 1945, next to fleet oiler USS Chipola (AO-63). After refueling was completed, she anchored in Berth 16 at 1845 Hours. Over the next 9 days, USS Miami conducted training flights and sustained a number of air raids. On March 8, USS LASSEN (AE-3) resupplied Miami with ammunition. On March 11, 1945, an Imperial Japanese Navy Yokosuka P1Y1 “Frances” kamikaze suicide plane hit USS Randolph (CV-15) on the starboard side aft just below the flight deck, killing 27 men, including 4 reported missing and 5 transferred to the hospital ship Relief where they later died, and wounding 105, during Operation Tan Number 2. On March 14, 1945, USS Miami joined Task Unit 59.6.1 consisting of Cruiser Division 16 and Destroyer Division 108 in clearing Ulithi at 1027 Hours. After gunnery training and refueling, the Task Unit joined up with Task Force 58 for strikes on Okinawa.
