USS Meade (DD-602) Depth charge exploding astern, after it was dropped from the destroyer’s stern depth charge racks, circa 1944. Meade is painted in Camouflage Measure 31, Design 6d, which is partially visible on her after smokestack, in the foreground of the photograph. USS Meade was undergoing overhaul at Mare Island Navy Yard, California, in early September 1944. On September 5, the ship conducted dock trials. On September 7-8, Meade loaded torpedoes and ammunition. On September 10, the ship went to Hunter Point to test her radars. On September 11, she degaussed and tested at the Treasure Island range. On September 12, she calibrated her magnetic compass. On September 13, 1944, a party of technicians came aboard to observe the test firings. After passing under the Golden Gate Bridge at 0837 Hours, USS Meade dropped depth charges at 15 knots to test structural integrity. She returned to Mare Island at 2117 Hours. she returned to Pearl Harbor September 20. During the next 2 months she provided training facilities for the Pacific Fleet Torpedo and Gunnery School, then sailed December 1 in the screen for USS Wisconsin (BB-64). Then she escorted the 7th Fleet during the Lingayen Gulf campaign. She spent the rest of the war in Philippine service.
