| USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) drydocked in Advanced Base Sectional Dock (ABSD-2) at the Pacific, circa 1944. Note the extensive anti-torpedo blister built into her hull side and paravane streaming chains running from her forefoot to her foredeck. Sailors are on deck. Pennsylvania steamed for emergency repairs on September 25. Arriving at Seeadler Harbor, Manus, Admiralty Islands, on September 28, she entered ABSD-2 on October 1, 1944, for repairs to her propeller and strut bearing on her number 4 shaft. With the repairs completed, she undocked on October 8. USS Pennsylvania joined Task Group 77.2 for the invasion of Leyte, Philippines. The ship, with the rest of the fleet, left Manus on October 12 and arrived off Leyte on October 18. The ship then engaged in shore bombardment until the Battle of Surigao Strait on October 24-25, 1944. | |
