Note Landing Craft, Personnel (Ramp) (LCP(R)) boats at left, and British Landing Craft, Tank (LCT) on the near side of the pier. Early models of landing craft were designated Landing Craft, Personnel (Ramp) or LCP(R). They did not have an armored bow ramp, which meant it was susceptible to damage from beach obstacles. The LCP(R) was used in beach landings at Operation Torch in North Africa and at Guadalcanal, Salerno and Tarawa. The Landing Craft, Personnel (Ramp) craft later was superseded in production by the Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP). During the war, 2,193 LCP(L) and 2,631 LCP(R) were built compared to 23,358 LCVP. By D-Day the LCVP had replaced the LCP(R). | |
