| USS SC-1360 directs Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP)s to the landing beaches. Originally designed as antisubmarine warfare craft with wooden hulls, these submarine chasers were perfectly suited, shallow draft vessels that could get in close to shore and direct LCVPs to their intended landing zone. USS SC-1360 was an SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser laid down on February 22, 1943, as PC-1360 by the Calderwood Yacht Yard, Incorporated of Manchester, Massachusetts. Commissioned USS SC-1360 on August 20, 1943. Lieutenant Junior Grade John N. Walsh, Jr. (March 5, 1921 – Sept. 17, 2010) commanded SC-1360 during the Okinawa invasion. SC-1360 was redesignated Control Submarine Chaser SCC-1360, reflecting its role as a landing craft control ship. After the war, she was disposed on October 23, 1947. USS Pickens (APA-190), a Haskell-class attack transport, carried the LCVP in the foreground. A unit of TransDiv 45, she arrived off Iwo Jima on the morning of February 19 with elements of the 4th Marine Division embarked. Despite cold weather and high seas, she stood off the assault beach from 0730-1800 Hours, to land the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, and their assigned Shore Party D Company 133 Naval Construction Battalion. Retiring at night, she returned daily to continue offloading cargo and to take on casualties. On February 28, 1945, she got underway for Saipan, thence to Guam to disembark her casualty passengers.
